Arctic Monkeys
Biography
Arcitc Monkeys is a band that was formed in High Green (Sheffield), in England in 2002. The founding members Jamie ‘Cookie’ Cook (guitar), Matt Helders (drums, vocals), Andy Nicholson and Alex Turner (vocals, guitar) were inspired by their peers to form a band. In June of 2003 they played their first ever gig at their local pub called “The Grapes”.
The first CD the band ever released had 18 songs on it. They gave the CD away for free at their concerts. Their first fans uploaded their free music to the internet. There their music continued to be shared and spread all around the world. Soon they got to sign a contract with the music label “Domino Records”. Many other labels were interested in them and offered them more money than “Domino Records”. But they liked the ‘down to earth’ style of the president of “Domino Records” and decided to stay with them.
Three years after their first gig the band released their debut album called “Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not.”. It was a huge success and turned out to be the fastest selling debut album in British music history. The band sold over 350’000 copies of the album in the first week. For Andy Nicholson the fame and success of the band was overwhelming, and he decided to quit the band. He was replaced by Nick O’Malley. So far, the band has released six albums featuring many international hits.
